About

Birmingham Airport is the UK’s third largest airport outside of London and the UK’s seventh largest overall. As the Midlands’ largest airport, prior to the pandemic, it handled almost 13m passengers a year, serving more than 133 direct scheduled & charter routes and offering an additional 424 possible connections worldwide.

Birmingham Airport is a one terminal operation featuring a mixture of check-in desks and self-service kiosks. There are five business lounges on site and free Wi-Fi for all passengers. With a SkyZone children’s entertainment facility and by offering a friendly environment for passengers with autism, the Airport has been named as an Autism friendly airport and was voted the UK’s most family friendly Airport in 2018.

Offering an Express Lane for business passengers, 13,000 car parking spaces across several surface and multi-storey car parks, and three hotels on-site offering over 475 rooms, Birmingham Airport has all the facilities that any passenger requires.

Located just eight miles from Birmingham city centre there are 35 million people living within a two-hour drive of the site and ten million within an hour. This means that 46% of the UK population is within two hours of the airport.

Birmingham is the country’s best-connected airport, being situated at the centre of the major road and rail networks. The airport is just 160km from central London benefiting from easy access to the South East and Midlands conurbation via the M1/M6 and the M42/M40.

Birmingham Airport is the closest airport to the 2022 Commonwealth Games, located within easy reach of Arena Birmingham, Smithfield, NEC, Coventry Arena, Edgbaston Stadium and The University of Birmingham venues. The Airport is the main gateway to the Midlands region making it the ideal central location to access all the Commonwealth Games venues.

The on-site, mainline rail station – Birmingham International – provides direct services to 45 stations. From here, there are regular direct trains into Birmingham City Centre, between Birmingham International and Birmingham New Street station, every hour. This enables easy and convenient access to the city centre and the Arena Birmingham and Smithfield venues and events on offer there. The airport’s proximity to Birmingham International is exploited by the Airport’s ‘Air-Rail Link’, which transports people between the railway station and the passenger terminal in just 90 seconds, carrying up to 1,600 people every hour.

The NEC venue can be accessed on foot or using the Air-Rail Link through the train station. Coventry Arena is less than 13 miles from the Airport via the A45, and there are also rail services to the Arena with one change at Coventry station. Edgbaston Stadium and The University of Birmingham venues are both located less than 12 miles from the Airport via the A45, and can also be accessed on the train via Birmingham New Street station, with a short transfer onto a bus or coach for the final part of the journey.

The quickest way to the city centre is by train from Birmingham International, the transport hub located between the Airport and the National Exhibition Centre. The Airport’s terminal is connected by a free and rapid monorail link, enabling you to go from plane to train in no time.

For those who are making Birmingham part of a longer UK visit Birmingham International is connected to the regional and intercity rail network with fast and frequent services to London and almost all of the UK’s major cities.

Alternatively, you can jump aboard a local bus which will take you into the heart of Birmingham. Average journey times are 30 minutes from the Airport to the city centre. The 900 bus service also connects the Airport with Coventry city centre.

National Express and Megabus coaches also stop outside the Terminal, connecting the Airport with Birmingham and beyond.
