Sights of Wonder: Photographs from the 1862 Royal Tour

About

Pyramids, sphinxes, temples and shrines: breathtaking views of these ancient and often iconic landmarks, captured by pioneering Victorian photographer Francis Bedford, feature in the Barber's first ever online-only exhibition, Sights of Wonder.

In 1862, Francis Bedford joined Albert Edward – the Prince of Wales and future King Edward VII – on a four-month journey through the eastern Mediterranean, planned by his parents, Queen Victoria and Prince Albert. His innovative photographs were exhibited on their return to a public excited to see sites they had only ever seen before in prints and paintings.

Generously lent by Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, these remarkable photographs from the Royal Collection, exhibited alongside an extract form the prince's own journal and extracts from contemporary newspaper and magazine articles, feature in an exhibition that explores how these sites and cultures, and the concept of empire – were perceived in the Victorian era.

This is the third exciting annual collaboration with Royal Collection Trust curated by University of Birmingham Masters' students.
